This study examines the role of political connect…

CHRISTIAN LEUZ, University of Chicago

This study examines the role of political connections in firms’ financing strategies and their long-run performance. We view political connections as an example for domestic arrangements which can reduce the benefits of global financing. Using data from Indonesia, we find that firms with strong political connections are less likely to have publicly traded foreign securities. As a result, estimates of the performance consequences of foreign financing are severely biased if value-creating domestic arrangements such as political relationships are ignored. Connections not only alter firms’ financing strategies, they also influence long-run performance. Tracking returns across several regimes, we show that firms have difficulty re-establishing connections with a new government when their patron falls from power, leading closely connected firms to underperform under the new regime and subsequently to increase their foreign financing.

Kepulauan Raja Ampat - Papua. Sedikitnya ada 450 jenis karang, 950
jenis ikan karang serta lebih dari 600 jenis molusca berbagai ukuran,
kata Conservation International. Dua tahun lalu, kawasan tersebut
diusulkan menjadi Kawasan Warisan Dunia.

pertambangan. Mengubah kawasan lindung - kaya keragaman hayati, menjadi
lubang-lubang raksasa.

Anda punya cerita tentang resiko PP No 02/2008 terhadap keragaman
hayati di kawasan lindung dan warga disekitarnya?

Tulis cerita anda dalam LOMBA OPINI Hutan Lindung, PP 02/2008 &
Keselamatan Rakyat.

Opini bisa dikaitkan dengan daya rusak tambang, masyarakat adat,
keragaman hayati, perempuan, otonomi daerah, bencana lingkungan, good
governance, perubahan iklim, pulau-pulau kecil dan krisis pangan.

Syaratnya mudah sekali. Cukup kirim opini anda sepanjang 700 - 1000
kata, sesuai tema, dan belum pernah dikirimkan ke media mana pun. Opini
diterima panitia paling lambat tanggal 22 April 2008, melalui email ke
Surprisingly, the outc…

ANDREAS UFEN, German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA)

Surprisingly, the outcome of the 1999 and 2004 elections in Indonesia and the resultant constellation of political parties are reminiscent of the first Indonesian parliamentary democracy of the 1950s. The dynamics of party politics is still marked by aliran (’streams’), i.e. some of the biggest political parties still have a mass base and are embedded in specific milieus. But politik aliran has lost a lot of its significance and re-emerged in a quite different form after the fall of Suharto in 1998. Starting with this observation, it is argued that parties are still socially rooted, so a modified aliran approach still has its analytical value. However, one can also witness a weakening of aliran (dealiranisasi) and a concomitant ‘Philippinisation’, which is indicated by the rise of presidential or presidentialised parties, growing intra-party authoritarianism, the prevalence of ‘money politics’, the lack of meaningful political platforms, weak loyalties towards parties, cartels with shifting coalitions and the upsurge of new local elites.

PETER TIMMER,Center for Global Development
In the long run - over the past four decades - i…

PETER TIMMER,Center for Global Development
In the long run - over the past four decades - improvements in food security in Indonesia have generally been driven by pro-poor economic growth and a successful Green Revolution, led by high-yielding rice varieties, massive investments in rural infrastructure, including irrigation, and ready availability of fertilizer. In the short run, food security in the country has been intimately connected to rice prices. After more than two decades of stabilizing domestic rice prices around the long-run trend of prices in the world market, Indonesia emerged from the devastating financial crisis in 1998 with domestic rice prices much higher than world prices and much higher than long-run trends of real prices in rupiahs. Although the current political rhetoric pushing for even higher prices uses food security as the rationale (i.e., they will cause greater self-sufficiency in rice), in fact few productivity gains are now available to rice farmers, so their gains will be consumers’ loses. High rice prices have a major impact on the number of individuals living below the poverty line and on the quality of their diet.

The paper reviews research on the impact of rice prices on the poor, on real wages in rural and urban areas, and on the broader macroeconomic consequences for investments in labor-intensive manufacturing. Discussion then focuses on how political and economic circumstances have changed since price stabilization, implemented by the national food agency (Bulog), balanced the needs of producers and consumers as Indonesia’s approach to food security. The most important current challenge for the country’s future food security is re-starting rapid, pro-poor growth. An additional challenge on the horizon is the ?supermarket revolution,? which is rapidly changing the basic structure of Indonesia’s food marketing system. Within a decade well over half of Indonesia’s rice is likely to be sold in supermarkets, thus transferring to the private sector a supply-management role that had historically been a public sector activity.

This paper compares the labour market returns to ability in Indonesia and the United States. In Indonesia, I find that the mathematics ability has no significant effect on income, while general cognitive ability positively affects income, with higher ability rewarded at an increasing rate. However, only the highly educated can reap the benefit of higher ability, implying the existence of credentialism. In the US, meanwhile, I find that only mathematics ability is significant, and there is neither non-linear effect of ability on income nor evidence of credentialism. Comparing the results, I find that there are indeed different valuations of skills between developed and developing countries. Higher mathematics ability is more rewarded in the US, while higher cognitive skills is more rewarded in Indonesia.
